The truth about procrastination

The truth about procrastination…

Procrastination happens when we have conflicting emotions concerning a task. Even if the task will ultimately lead to the desired outcome when it requires that we push ourselves or move away from our comfort zone our own nature is likely to resist it.

These days I’ve been paying attention to the tasks I leave for «when I have time», or after I check email, make a hotel reservation, respond to an inquiry.

As the day ends and I look back at what I’ve accomplished I recognized a pattern emerging… those tasks that require a little bit more effort or challenge me in any way, were being placed on the back burner.

So here’s how I’m dealing with MY procrastination:

CLARITY – I can’t stress this enough. I’m all about CLARITY. Without a WHY behind the task I’m dreading, it’s really difficult to roll up my sleeves and get it done.
DESIGN: Understand who I need to be to accomplish your task. There are many versions of us playing at the same time, every day. The creative one, the procrastinator, the achiever, the judgmental…. Once we get to know all our parts, the good and the bad, we can then call upon the ones we need at specific times, designing our best version at all times.
LISTEN: Avoid suppressing the emotion that the task brings up. Be curious, what about the task makes me anxious, frustrated, etc.? I dig deep and bring the emotion to the surface. Nothing makes the emotion go away faster than putting it in the spotlight and seeing it for what it is.
NO MULTITASKING: Multitasking is another way of procrastination. Is doing a lot of nothing all the time. I work on focusing on one task at a time and see it to completion. Yes, it’s not always fun but just like pulling a Band-Aid, getting it done without distractions always works better.
PARTNER: When the going gets tough, I look for support. If nothing is working then partner with someone that will help you get out of your own way and get it done.

Are you ready to STOP procrastinating? Then let’s get together!
