Finding Clarity Towards Living In Abundance With Petia Kolibova Burns

I cannot wait to share my conversation with Petia. She is an abundance and light activation coach who guides women to intuitively connect with their innovation so that they can experience personal and professional magnetism and become unapologetically abundant. One of the things that strike me about hopping on talk with Petia and looking forward to this conversation with her is her capacity to bring light to women visionaries and women business owners and help them see how their growth and success bring light into the world. Please don’t miss this conversation with Petia. I’ll meet you on the other side.

Petia, I’m excited to have this conversation. Let’s begin by talking about your clarity journey. How did you arrive at this moment, interview, and sharing of your message?

I feel like clarity is something that I used to always pray for because I thought that it will change everything. It’s the clarity of who I am, why am I here, and what I’m supposed to be doing. It’s like, “Why the heck am I even here?” Any single time that we get these glimpses of clarity, it is life-giving and heart-opening. For most of my life, I was outsourcing that. I was looking into others like, “What are other people doing?” I try to find myself through that. Although that is beautiful when we see it as an inspiration, a possibility, but not when we see that as the only way, then unfortunately that’s what I was doing for decades because I felt lost and didn’t know who I am.

Everything felt like in a fog. What helped me to spark that clarity was realizing when I look around me that that’s not the life I want to live because with my unpronounceable name and my accent is from the Czech Republic, a very small town, when I was growing up, you wouldn’t even hear of clarity. It’s not something you ever talk about. I grew up in a lot of scarcity, feeling that I’m not enough and looking to others for what to do. When I was eighteen, I run away from home and attempted suicide because I said, “If this is life, I don’t want to live it.” You can tell I didn’t succeed. It took me on this path of always running from home, myself, one relationship and another relationship, one job, another job, going to school, and always externally looking.

When I was almost 30 years old, I realized that I keep asking others who am I and how I should live. I’m like, “If I don’t know, how they’re supposed to know? If I don’t like myself, how should others?” That’s when I started the internal journey. Thankfully, I found Louise Hay. That helped me so much because I feel like she and all the authors that she has in her publishing company, and Dr. Jody Spencer and Dr. Wayne Dyer, Gabby Bernstein, and many other great authors, give me hope. That was the first time that I didn’t try to model someone and be like someone, but I started this inner self-inquiry from a place of curiosity versus judgment. That’s how I got now.

We’re going to talk about how that turned into your work in a second. In this show, we believe in helping our clients master their clarity. Some people say, “Masters in clarity, so you are the master of clarity?” It’s like, no. We guide our clients to be the masters of their clarity because there’s no such thing as outside clarity. There are outside guidance and thinking frameworks, but it’s almost like there are containers in which you can dig for your clarity, but you bring the ingredients.

There are a lot of recipes out there, but you bring the ingredients. Each one of us brings the ingredients. We mix something with those ingredients, but they have to come from within. I love the journey and as we were chatting before the show about the clarity journey, but there’s usually not a lot of clarity in the journey until the end. There is a lot of sometimes darkness, confusion, or a glimpse of clarity, and then back under the wave and so on and forth.

You’ve been able to find your light. At eighteen, you walked away, left, and run away from darkness. It meant to your home at the time, but it was darkness. You’ve been able to find, walk and step into your light, but you didn’t stop there. How did you turn that journey into your light to what I understand is helping women journey to walk and step into their lights? It’s because I think there are three steps. Those are journey, walk, and then own it.

That’s where it all has to start. It has to start with the own embodiment. What we are desiring to see in the world, we get to become that. That’s how I was able to transmute the darkness, pain, and suffering into something more meaningful because I wanted to believe that there is more to life than what we are being told, shown, or conditioned to. I became the embodiment of what I wanted to see in the world, who I wanted to be as a woman and as a leader, then I started to have people. This is many years ago when they started to tell me like, “I feel so good around you. You have such good energy.”

[bctt tweet=»What we are desiring to see in the world, we get to become that.» via=»no»]

Many years decade ago, I’m like, “What are you talking about? What energy?” It’s like starting to notice and being open to how people are seeing you. They can recognize what you cannot yet see in yourself. I then was able to bring it into my business, my life, through a podcast, and retreats because I realized that I’m not the only one who is feeling this way and the tools that I’m using for clarity and empowerment, to live the fulfilling light, creating the abundance.

I don’t have some secret that was given to me and lock it behind the door. It’s something that can be shown. It’s something that can be taught not by telling, but by showing. First, you become the light, and then you become activated. That’s what I became when my business activated other people. I became the one that I needed. I became the one who is bringing hope and light. I’m the one who is teaching.

It’s who you wish you had met when you were eighteen.

If I would, I would probably not be who I am. I was asked earlier in an interview, “What would you tell your nineteen-year-old self?” I’m like, “There are things that I would tell her, but I wouldn’t tell her to change anything because then I wouldn’t be sitting who I am in this place.”

That’s a good reminder for whoever is reading that might go through the darkness. You never know when you meet people on their journey. If everything’s falling apart or everything is as bad as it can be, keep on going and moving forward because with every step you go through that darkness is closer to the light. I love to give my audiences some tangible and actionable things to take away because it’s very nice to talk high level of getting to the light, “What the heck? I’m in the darkness. How can I surface them up? What can I do for 5 or 3 minutes, a micro action that will get me past?” For some people, maybe it will help someone survive.

Thank you for asking that because sometimes you are reading a blog, you feel motivated and are like, “Good for you, but what do I do?” I don’t want people to feel inspired and motivated, but to have something that they can do about their life. Here are the two things that helped me to create immense clarity in my life. The first one was getting very clear on what are my core values. It doesn’t matter how many times you have done core values exercise before. You’re a different person now than you were a week ago or yesterday. What helped me was to take a big piece of paper and divide it in two. On one hand, I wrote down the things I don’t stand for, and on the other side, what I do stand for.

For example, I don’t stand for hate. I stand for life. I won’t stand for being cheap. I stand for generosity. I won’t stand for cheating. I stand for loyalty. Sometimes it’s easier for us to say what we don’t want than what we do want. Write first what you don’t want to see in the world. What is aggravating you? What is upsetting you? What is frustrating you? What hurts you? I’m happily married to my husband, but before that, I had a narcissistic ex-husband who was cheating on me and ex-partners who were cheating and hurting me physically. I knew what I didn’t want. I wanted someone who was loyal, loving, family-oriented, and all of that. I put it on paper.

You then write twenty things on each side, always the opposite of each other. Take a highlighter or colored pen and highlight the three things that you stand for that are non-negotiable for you on the right side. When I look at it, I saw that I stand for loyalty, generosity, and growth, which is nice. The next step is the most important step. You have to take an inventory of your life because when I look at my life and ask myself, “Do I live in a growth mindset, generosity, or loyalty? Am I accepting or settling in something less than this?” nothing in my life reflected that.

Of course, I was feeling stuck and depressed. Little by little I ask myself, “What can I safely change?” It’s not like, “Screw this, I’m out. I’m divorcing. I’m leaving my job, and I’m moving to Hawaii.” That’s your dream. Go for it, but we don’t want to change and turn everything around like quitting. We wanted to ask ourselves, “What can I safely do to change this today?” I wrote a little note about my three core values.

I put them in the mirror, in the bathroom, my office, my wallet, and everywhere because you get to recondition your mind and keep checking in with yourself. This was a super important tool, and it is still very important to me. I do teach it to my one-on-one clients because if you don’t know what you stand for, you fall for everything.

Transformation is not about living in your current cocoon, dumping everything, the husband, kids, dogs, the job, and moving to a new reality. The deepest transformations are those that can be initiated and expanded from within, and through that internal transformation, you don’t already change your world, but you change the world around you. You can change a marriage, the relationship, and the experience of your children. You can change a job that you hated into something you love without ever quitting or changing the actual context. That’s beautiful. What impact do you want to have in the world when all is said and done?

When all is said and done, I want to be remembered as someone who created a generational healing and world-changing abundance. I truly believe that when great people make great money, we can make an immense impact. I feel like it’s time that we shift and change the balance of where the world is heading. There are many amazing, beautiful people who are gifted and they don’t know how to create abundance because there were never thought and shown. They lived in scarcity. They were taught about money, things that are not true. I truly believe that when we can create abundance for people who are soulful and heart-centered, we will change the world. That’s my legacy, and that’s when I leave.

What do you have going on in 2023 that is just starting?

In my personal life, we are intending to grow our family with my husband. That’s most important as a woman for me. That’s at the forefront of my heart. Secondly, with our company, we used to do retreats and a lot of events in person, and with the family, all of this is shifting. We are focusing on creating online experiences and social success experiences. We launched our book which became a bestseller. I’m focusing on creating abundance. We are going to be launching an academy, mastermind, and all of them online. Those are the things that I’m truly looking forward to because we are empowering leaders and visionaries on how to create more abundance and impact.

You’ve mentioned the authors and the writings of Louise Hay. Is there one special book that you would say, “If you haven’t read anything, start with this?”

The universe has your back from Gabby Bernstein. It was the first book ever that gave me permission to not push and hustle, but to trust, surrender and allow. That changed my view of the world and gave me permission to breathe.

The Universe Has Your Back: Transform Fear to Faith

It’s to stop running away. Any parting thoughts? Also, share with us where can people find you.

The one thing that I wanted to say is we get to change from the inside, and the outside can change. It reminded me of a quote from Dr. Wayne Dyer, “When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” That breathed life into me when I was still in a place that I don’t want it to be. When you look at things differently, the world will change. Instead of trying to change your circumstances, try to look at things first differently. That’s what I would love to leave people with because it helped me tremendously on my journey. To connect with me, the easiest way is on my Instagram and my website. Both of them are Petia Kolibova. Those are my two favorite places, plus my podcast Unapologetically Abundant. That’s where I reside, teach, and thrive.

Thank you for spending time with us from this place that you’ve brought to the world, this container where you help women come home. It sounds like you run away for many years and you have been able to come home to you and now make a home for a bigger family, which I can see it’s happening already. Thank you for your time.

Thank you so much for having me.

Do you know how many times you read a blog and it’s all about how great the guest is or the grand things that they’ve done? While Petia is all of that, in this particular conversation that we finished, it’s really all about you. She breaks down a very simple exercise that won’t take you more than 2 or 3 minutes to do and that could change everything for you. Go ahead and reread the blog and do the exercise. It will take you less than five minutes. It might change not just your day or week, but it might change your life. Don’t miss it.

Get Gutsy: Understanding Our Journey To Our Present Moment With Jenny Fenig

I’m so excited to have this interview with Jenny Fenig. Jenny and I have known each other for a few years. We are both coaches. We cross paths through events and have done interviews in the past but I’m looking forward to catching up with Jenny on what has transpired since COVID and where is her business now.

Jenny’s a women’s leadership coach helping you be confident, joyful and paid to do what you love without burnout. As a successful business leader for more than two decades, Jenny offers astute counsel and masterful coaching to bring out the best in her clients. She is passionate about taking people on a journey inward and upward. Don’t miss this interview with Jenny Fenig.

Jenny, I’m so excited about this conversation. You’ve done such amazing work with the ladies that you work with. Let’s start at the beginning. I always joke because I’ll let you tell me about your clarity journey and you’ll say, “There was not a lot of clarity for times. It’s not linear,” but how did you get to now?

Out into my woods, I have this surrounded by trees and forest here in the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts, which is where I live and it’s so not the scene of my earlier life growing up in Florida and Georgia and living in New York City, which is where I started my career. It did not look like this. The question of how I got to where I am is filled with twists and turns. It’s filled with, “I never thought that would happen. I didn’t know I’d be in this room. I didn’t know I’d be having these kinds of conversations.” It was about me learning to trust those nudges and the inner voice and knowing that it was a thing. It was a partner to me and understanding that energy.

A big piece of my journey has been harnessing the energy and seeing that my energy and everyone’s energy is a gift but if you’re not sure what it is or it freaks you out, which it did for me for a long time, it’s very easy to try to push it away or try to numb it, which I did. It becomes like you’re in this battle with the voice with this energy. That has been the path for me. It’s to recognize that myself and this force that I have and the force that is around is we’re in a partnership.

From an early age, I had gifts and talents. I was recognized for those. I was fortunate that my gifts and talents were appreciated by the system. In school, I was labeled as gifted. I was in the gifted class. That led me to be a very good student, be able to go to college on a full-ride academic scholarship and keep that scholarship because my grades were good.

I learned how to work hard and play hard. I partied a lot but I also was able to show up for my classes. It was a game to me to get the best grades as possible but also have as much fun as possible. I did all of that. Eventually, I made it to New York City to pursue a career in public relations thinking that was it. I hit the jackpot. I’m in the media capital of the world, New York City, working at this major public relations agency, traveling around the world working with these big clients and big projects, campaigns and launches and then recognizing because that voice spoke to me saying, “Jenny, this is not it.” I was like, “What do you mean this is not it?”

I know because it wasn’t right. A lot of my journey has been about pursuing the thing I think I’m meant to pursue because the path led me there. It felt right at the time and then you outgrow it. You’ve learned everything there is to learn. You realize it was a stepping stone. It was like this stepping stone to get me to the next gig. The next gig was I was producing conferences and creating something out of thin air like doing research with executives, asking them about their biggest challenges and turning that into something that these corporate leaders and the vendors who sold to the corporate leaders would want to buy.

That taught me to be an entrepreneur and think like an entrepreneur because I had to create a product in the way of an experience. I started getting a cut of profits from those creations. That was my first taste of like, “This is what it’s like to make good money.” Not just a salary, which when I was in PR, it’d only get you so far and it wasn’t that far. That taught me, “This is nice.” This is what it’s like to make some money based on my success, understanding the market and being able to serve that market. The same thing happened in that position, which was I outgrew it.

I learned everything I was meant to learn and then I eventually quit and discovered very soon after the field of coaching, which is where I’ve been ever since. Once I learned that it was a thing, I realized I’d been doing this my whole life. I didn’t know that this was a vocation or I could do this. This would be the job and the thing. I’ve been doing this since 2008. I’d been doing it much longer before I knew that I was doing it. As a vocation and a craft, I’ve been honing this, investing in this and celebrating this since 2008.

It’s taken on so many different looks and feels from one-on-one coaching to group coaching and in-person. In New York City, it was support groups that I was leading for new moms because I was a new mom. The whole way, it’s been following my instincts and seeing where there was a need that wasn’t being served in the market, getting in there and serving it. Filling it and being able to help people.

I was always driven by helping people and that’s still what I do. I help women see how they can use these gifts and talents, do great work, be paid well and not burn out in the process. That’s why my work is dedicated to private clients that are in my group programs. I have some wonderful corporate contracts that have been a newer piece of my work in the last few years.

That was one of the gifts of COVID, honestly, where a lot of these companies realize that they could have people working remotely. Whole businesses change the face of how things have looked. That’s been a newer piece of my work that I’m very happy about. I like having various revenue streams. It’s like that feeling of you have a few things going and it’s nice. I’m a Gemini so I like to have a few things going. It serves me. It works well for me.

MIC 24 | Present Moment

Present Moment: One of the gifts of COVID is that many of these companies realize that they could have people working remotely, and the whole business has changed the face of how things have looked.

I love how you’ve walked through this journey. I want to unpack a few things because it’s important. Otherwise, we’ll move to the next question but I want to go deeper. You were very intentional about the wording you used. You and I have known each other for a while and I can’t wait to catch up and understand what are you up to in 2022. I’m noticing your intentionality in the word that you choose and it matters. That’s part of our evolution as we become leaders in our field and more intentional about the creation that we bring forth.

You talked about energy and also partnering with your energy and your inner voice or inner consciousness versus the judging like, “I did this and that wasn’t it so that was a mistake.” No, what I heard loud and clear is my journey was following and partnering with my inner voice. Sometimes grudgingly. Sometimes not. I can only assume. Sometimes filled with self-doubt and sometimes not but never from a place looking back at that was a wrong term.

You and I are in a place where we understand that the train station that we are standing at is we came here through the train that brought us here. Whatever stops that train did in the way we welcome them whether they were fun, beautiful train station stops or not so good. Ultimately, we are celebrating where we are. Thank you for that because there’s a lot of misconception about looking back and judging the journey we’ve been on versus celebrating the journey we’ve been on. The difference is whether we are happy with the station or the moment we are in.

Every experience gets you to where you are.

In some ways, it brings you full circle. You incorporate from a different lens.

I’m serving that population and I have such empathy and understanding because I was there. I know that world. It was interesting because when I left and when I discovered coaching, I was like, “You can be an entrepreneur. You can serve like your entrepreneur population or those people who are self-employed.” There was this feeling at one point of like, “Bye, see you. Good luck.” It doesn’t have to be either/or. That’s been a remembrance for me. It can be on both ends. You don’t have to pick one or the other. These full-circle moments are so special. We’re fortunate enough to be able to live long enough to have those moments you want to pause and appreciate.

Let’s dig into your work. You are working with corporate. We can talk about what you’re doing there but your heart has been in helping, specifically women to find, craft, package and sell. They’re brilliant.

I was always like that from the beginning. I don’t think I would’ve said that when I first started as a coach because you don’t know. You’re just trying to find your way forward. You’re grasping. I know I’m coaching. I always was clear I was coaching women in transition. I did have a few men who worked with me at the beginning too and we did great work together but I had this desire to help women.

Once I got further along on my entrepreneurial journey and was building out my business, I got very fascinated with online marketing which I know you can appreciate. I started investing time, money and energy into these masterminds and traveling to California and Arizona. I live out East. I wrapped my head around all of those tactics and strategies and it worked.

My business was growing. I was hosting this and that. People were coming to me like, “Can I do that? Help me do that. How do you coach? Can you help me coach?” You follow those breadcrumbs. You evolve and evolve. Eventually, I created my own coach certification program because I saw a gap in the market there.

It’s been about listening to my market. Even more than that, listening to that inner voice because there are things that I sense and know. That is so important for people to trust themselves. Be a visionary and a leader of things before other people. It can be hard and feel a bit lonely at times because it’s like, “Does anyone else get this? I’m getting and seeing this.” That’s your gift and you have these flashes. It’s your job to sit with that. Build that out. Figure out what you can do with that. What does that idea want to become?

The idea has picked you for a reason. It sees you as a worthy candidate to make the idea real out in the world. A big piece of this process for me is trusting the ideas. I don’t take action on every idea because that would be nuts but there are some solid ideas that I have received over time that I build out into whatever it’s meant to become.

My community sees that in me and they’re drawn to work with me in various programs and retreats. A big part of my job essentially is to be brave, courageous and gutsy. That was the name of my first book, Get Gutsy. Trust those impulses and know that because of all these wonderful tools that exist with technology and everything that’s at our fingertips, you can create anything.

MIC 24 | Present Moment

Get Gutsy

We are very aligned on this. Have you read What Do You Do With an Idea?

No, I don’t know that book. That sounds cool.

I’ll mail it to you as a thank you for joining me. This is the gift all of my clients get when they start working with me. When I found this book in a bookstore, I was like, “This book was written for me,” I thought. It’s also written for you, Jenny because it has this concept that ideas peak vehicles or channels. You probably have experienced this. I have experienced this. I have an idea and I don’t take action. 2 or 3 years later, I see it in the market.

That idea picked a few channels and one of them took action on it. That is such a huge part of misunderstanding, misconception and a mindset of lack because people feel. We are visionaries so we operate a little differently. I live in a world where ideas are abundant. I know that when I am touched by an idea, I will let it simmer. Unless it bugs me for days, weeks or months, I won’t take action.

My husband will watch me or people will say, “Why would you give your ideas away?” I will be with someone and say, “I have this idea.” I’m not called to do anything with it but I hold this idea in my head and I’m called to give it to you. It could be a random person on the street. It doesn’t have to be a client. There’s this opportunity for all of us to be in this collective consciousness to take action on those that are your ideas and the rest. By all means, share them with the world.

I say to my clients, “Listen to the ideas that won’t leave you alone.” Those ideas that bug you and wake you up in the middle of the night like, “I dreamt about that.” I’m sitting in the bathtub and the idea’s coming to me. I’m driving, the idea’s still there. It keeps knocking on the door of your heart. Eventually, if you don’t take action on it, it’s going to go someplace else. It’s not a stalker and that is never going to leave you alone. Your job as the visionary and as the person who can help bring it into form is to pay attention to the ones that won’t leave you alone because that’s the key to your next chapter. It’s the key to your next level of expression.

[bctt tweet=»Pay attention to the ones that won’t leave you alone. That is the key to your next chapter.» via=»no»]

Much of this is building out your body of work. It’s one thing. That’s taken me some time to grasp. It’s something that you create over time. That’s great news because I do get bored. I don’t want to do this one thing forever. I do the thing as long as I’m meant to do the thing and then I know. That’s been a journey too of like, “I’m complete here. I’ve taken this as far as I want to take it and it’s time to let it go.” The hard part there sometimes is letting it go before you have the next thing.

It’s funny you mentioned that because it’s also my experience. It’s because we are creators and visionaries. I’m taking this conversation on a limb but there are one of the things I’ve started to create and I’ve already had success with. There are a lot of ideas that I know either start and say I’m done or I know that I will start and will not grow so I am packaging and selling ideas.

Part of the work that I’m doing with clients is helping my clients exit their idea. Start an idea, take action, create something in the world and then look to move it away. Have that idea or project be adopted by someone else. You can call it an exit strategy or selling your business. This is one of the things I’ve done in the last few years. I had a product. I didn’t create a product. I created a solution for myself and then my clients wanted whatever I was doing to solve my problem. This was specifically on getting on stages.

I met someone who wanted to offer that product under their business. I sold it. I didn’t sell my business. I just sold a product. It has its own form. It’s a multimillion-dollar business with a team of 30. For anybody reading, it’s this concept of flow, idea and creation. There are infinite ways to do business. There are also infinite business models in which you can operate.

There’s another way that I’ve embraced this too. I love working up close and personal with people like live where you’re facilitating a program and leading a program in real time. You have calls. You’re maybe in-person retreats and all that. I only do a few of those a year because they require a lot of energy. They’re at a higher price point. I have all these creations or ideas from the past of programs or courses that I, at one point, led live but I’m not leading live anymore.

They’re done. They completed but they still are amazing. They still can serve so you can have these evergreen horses and bundles for people to buy. I’ve had all of that on the back end of my business but we didn’t yet have this polished page where we could send people. We got that done and it feels so good. It’s not even like all of the work I’ve ever done. It’s a sliver but it’s the sliver that we want to put out. I look at it and it’s like, “My team and I did that together and people can be served by it. It’s done.”

It’s part of what you were saying. It’s the body of work. Why would you put the body of work in a drawer when you can sell it? I suspect there’s a Black Friday coming.

You would suspect right and not just on that Friday. I’m a trend booker. I’m like, “Not just the Friday. Everyone does Black Friday. I’m going to have it a little bit different.” You feel that energy. For the first time in a long time, I’m going to have something up and out with many options and have a good time with it because why not?

Don’t put it in the drawer if it can help people and you can do your part to have it all dialed in using this great technology that’s available and someone can get your stuff and go through it on their time. It gives them an easier experience with you like a taste of your stuff. Not everyone wants or is able to come in at a higher level straight away. It’s a wise move for those who can do it across the board. I’m excited about that.

You are a pattern disrupter and an energy queen. What’s coming your way?

It’s always a mystery. If I were to tell you, everything was going to happen. I don’t know but I do know it’s going to be good. Even the stuff that’s hard, I will know how to work through it because I have these wonderful tools that I have developed over time. I have a great team in place that I can go to for support. I am running a program called Energy Queen.

This is a great example of being able to take an idea and take it further. I developed that program earlier in 2021. It was great. I had the idea. It was so funny because I had the name. I was like, “Energy queen.” It came through and I asked a colleague whom I respect, who’s very creative. She’s like, “No, that’s not the name. Don’t call it that.” I’m like, “I have to come up with a new name.”

It took me weeks and I go, “Screw that. That is the name. Why are you listening to her more than me? I love her but her audience wouldn’t resonate with that. Her audience is not my audience. I know my audience and I know me and I know this idea.” That’s what it’s called. I had a blast bringing it into form. We ran it twice under a pretty similar format. It was 6 or 7 weeks. It was my way of sharing what I knew about knowing the highest and best use of you. Not everything is worth your time.

As you get further in life, you learn that. You start mastering the game when you recognize, “That is not a good use of my time. I’m not doing it anymore.” I put together this framework of being able to see what that is, know your boundaries and take your work to a whole new level without burnout, overextending yourself, underpricing and all of it.

[bctt tweet=»Not everything is worth your time, and as you get further in life, you learn that, and you start mastering the game when you recognize that it is not a good use of your time.» via=»no»]

We ran it twice. I loved it. The next time I was thinking about it, I was like, “I can’t do it like that again.” It needs more and a different approach. I listened to that and we extended it. It was a way to take the idea and make it bigger. The framework was there but we made it bigger. I love branding and I said, “It’s still Energy Queen but there’s something else to it. How can we show that it is more?” It’s Energy Queen The Experience. All the content was already created so that’s our core content library. That existed. I don’t need to redo or recreate it. It’s there and the women who join get access to that core content library.

What we did was we extended it into a three-month program. I created different kinds of calls which we called Activation Calls one per month. We had four of these calls and they set the theme. We went deep into having them do work on these calls. We had these other kinds of calls called Amplification Calls that are shorter in length and they’re looking out how you’re laser focusing your time. What’s working well to a whole new level?

There were some other elements but it’s the that this is the idea that would leave me alone. I wasn’t planning to include an in-person retreat with this. It was an online program. What was interesting was I was leading a course at that time, the first time I’d ever led this course called Retreat Leader. I was teaching my audience how to create and lead retreats because I had done that lots of times in my business. I had never had a straight-up course on it. I was like, “I have to include a retreat.”

I surrendered to that and made it happen so fast. I found this place where I had hosted retreats years back in my community. With COVID, everything shifted. We were on this hiatus and I was like, “We’re going back to the red line.” I went down. I was like, “Here are the dates I want.” We ask our clients when they signed up, “Why did you sign up?” We have an application for this program too. Most of them include retreats.

It’s so interesting. If I would’ve ignored that idea, those clients might not have joined because it was that piece that was the magnetic part for them. I’m excited about that particular program. That’ll take us into 2023. I have a longer-term mastermind that I will be re-enrolling for. We had a retreat to Costa Rica in one of our higher levels in that mastermind. I’m conceiving like, “What does that look like?” I dance with the ideas. Nothing is set in stone.

MIC 24 | Present Moment

Present Moment: Nothing is set in stone.

I like to be fluid. I like to listen and respond because it has to be exciting for me. If I’m not excited by it then I’m not going to do it. I’ve got my work that I do a lot of speaking. I have a connection with a corporate wellness company and a contract with them. They bring me on to speak to a lot of their clients. My main topics are extinguishing burnout and balance and boundaries so I do a lot of speaking with them.

They’re my client, technically. It’s this company called Chief and I am a guide for their members. They have a lot of guides like me, like hundreds of us. They have thousands of members. I have several groups with my work with Chief and I love their senior executive women at the top of their game. I come in and bring my facilitation skills. I’m excited about what 2023 we’re bringing. There are going to be a lot of shifts within my family. My oldest son is going to be moving into high school so that brings some shifts and changes. I’m in the mystery of it all.

In 2022, I’ve been reflecting on this and I’m very grateful. The last few years have been nuts. We’ve all been in it. No one’s been immune. We’ve all been hit with these punches and vials. It was hard. 2020 and 2021 were very challenging. With the ways that I had been doing this, I couldn’t do it that way anymore because I had been having some retreats. I love retreats. To me, that’s some of the most special work I do. I couldn’t do that or put those on confidently. I had one before things happened. It was in January 2020. I got one out of the gate and I had one in October 2021 at my home.

I felt like I could do that because I can pull that off but a lot of changes happened. It was challenging. 2022 to me was the year where I was able to put things into place again like put it down and feel confident with that. Me starting to get some of that contract felt so good because that is this consistent stream that comes in and there’s no marketing or sales required. That is liberating for me.

I love marketing sales. It’s creative but it’s a lot. It’s like another job. You have to do that just to do your job. That was my goal. In 2021, I was like, “Something’s got to give. I’ve been doing this a long time and I’m not interested and keep doing it like this. I laser-focused. My goal was to get myself in rooms with people who inspire me. I wanted to align with organizations that represented the value system that I felt was solid and growing and going places.

I’ve been able to do that. I feel very fortunate. When I do my programs and projects, they’re from a place of pure creativity and joy like, “This is what I want to do.” For anyone who wants to come with me, come on. We’re going to have a fun time. I want to double down on that for 2023 and see where it takes me and my community.

We’re going to wrap up but one of the things I’m hearing is that don’t judge how the work shows up. Be open to evolution. No judgment because someone is doing this or that over there on what feels right to you. I love that you found your balance, especially through COVID. We all had to find a new way of doing our work. Where can people find you and your last thoughts?

My home base is JennyFenig.com. I’m also on Instagram and Facebook. If you follow me on Facebook, follow my personal. You can convert your personal page into a professional one. On Facebook, you’ll find me at Jenny Amon Fenig. My maiden name is Amon and I’m much more present there than on my business page. You’ll be able to see more of my thoughts and what’s going on and invitations and things like that. I’d love also, Dolores, if it’s okay with you to offer your audience a free resource.

It’s our Reclaim Your Time template and that is something based on what we were talking about. I’m making sure that this link works because we went through a major shift. We shifted over. That’s another piece too. Sometimes you realize you outgrow tools. You’re like, “I don’t need this tool anymore. Why are we paying for this tool?” You have to get smart about your expenses because so much can go out. If you’re oblivious to it, you’re like, “I know I made money but where is it?”

We made a major shift by consolidating tools and letting go of tools that were good at one point but now we don’t need anymore. This is a great tool for helping you reclaim your time. That’s my big thing, my people live big lives. We have a lot of things going on and we want to be able to do great work but also have time for all the other areas of our life. ReclaimTimeNow.com is where you all can grab that tool.

Thank you so much for having me, Dolores. It was so awesome. I loved being able to connect with you. I’m sending good vibes to everyone. We’re creating this world. Thank goodness for the younger generation too because they’re on top of things. I’m feeling good because I have kids and I feel that that generation got it going. They’re like, “I’m not afraid.” I’m like, “I’m not going to live my life afraid.”

I do know that those of us who’ve been called to this work are called for a reason so keep trusting. You got to keep trusting yourself. Don’t compare yourself to others. That is a big issue in this space, especially. No one can do it like you. No one is you. No one has your unique vibration, your fingerprint or your voice. Please, get out there and do your work.

[bctt tweet=»Keep trusting yourself and don’t compare yourself to others.» via=»no»]

Jenny, thank you so much for your time.

Jenny and I had a great conversation. We were not thinking we were going to go there but our conversation focused on how we manage our energy and how we look back at our journey and understand whatever experiences we’ve had in the past, what brought us to our present moment and how we make the most of each one of them. If you are finding your path to clarity and you are looking to understand how your journey has evolved and where to go next, make sure you read this episode with Jenny Fenig.

Building A Solid Business With Jennifer Morilla

I am so excited to have this conversation with Jen Morilla, someone I’ve known for a few years now. I love her energy, creativity, and how committed she is to solving big world problems. Let me tell you a little bit about Jen. Jen is an impact travel influencer and clean water initiator. She uses her influence for good. Her mission is to create incredible possibilities of transformation for humankind to live lives of impact, purpose, and courage. Her purpose is to discover humanity, understand a culture, and connect emotionally with people.

As she does that, she’s driven to leave a little something behind that can change a life. After starting her career in the New York City agency world, she decided to turn what she learned in her Master’s and undergrad into social entrepreneurship and action. She has now traveled to over 44 countries, impacted an estimated 13,600 people in 7 countries, and continues to grow as an ambassador to young professionals, coaches, young women, and women in getting their businesses up and running and thriving. Let me introduce you to Jen, and help me welcome Jen Morilla to the show.

I’m so excited, Jen, to finally nail you down for this convo. I know you’ve been traveling all over, and that’s your signature thing. You’re a free lady. Let’s start with that. How do we get to this day when you do what you love? You don’t work because when we do what we love, we don’t wake up and have a job. When you do what you love, you are successful, profitable, young, and have it all. You have beauty. How do we get to this moment?

I love the flattery. Thank you. I’m excited to be here. It’s so funny. I was on the phone with my parents. They have a house in Upstate New York and were like, «We want to go away with the whole family. This weekend doesn’t work for your sister. How about next weekend?» I’m like, «I’m not here. I’m in Montana.» They’re like, «You just got back from Europe?» I was like, «Yes.» My dad’s like, «I want your life.»

He screams out of nowhere from the other side of the room. He’s like, «What’s in Montana?» I was like, «I’m going for a workshop, and I’m going to take a day before and a day after.» They’re like, «Who do you think you are?» I was like, «What do you mean? I don’t understand. What’s a big deal?» I never travel to the US. If I have a conference in Italy, then I’d be like, «I get it.» I recognized that the older I get, the harder it is for people to be like, «How do you move so much?»

You did the thing of going to college and getting a job from 9:00 to 5:00 with a boss where you had to sign in and sign out, and let someone know that you were not coming in. All the way fast forward to now, what was the journey like? I know there were some bumps in the road. There always are. What does it look like? It’s because one day you said, «I will be free.» Whether or not you were aware of it, you made an internal decision to never live in someone else’s schedule. Talk to me.

It all started when I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree. What kick-started the whole thing was essentially the loss of my brother. I had a younger brother, and he passed away. It was very traumatic. That was in my early twenties. It was my senior year of college. My entire life flipped upside down. I come from a Cuban family, second generation. My parents were born in Cuba and immigrated here. I was born here. I was raised by them and my grandparents. My parents are also entrepreneurs. I always knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur, but I didn’t know what I was going to do. If you would have told me in high school and college, I’d have been like, «I’ll run my own business one day,» but who knows?

My brother and I were close. I was 21 and thought I had it all figured out. I was going to get married, have babies, buy a house, and everything was going to work accordingly, and then it didn’t. I graduated from university. It was the year my brother died. I almost didn’t graduate, to be honest. I started working for two years and then went back and did my Master’s. After I did my Master’s, I came back to the US and worked again in corporate for three years. I was pretty miserable from the inside. From the outside, everything looked great. I was living in New York. I was working in New York City for a marketing agency. I was an account manager. I was making good money. I was living life.

For me, it was a constant routine, and I didn’t like to be told what to do. I should have known that my dad had said it to me when I was a kid. I don’t like to be told what to do. All my ex-boyfriends learned that. My current boyfriend now gets it. He’s like, «I’ll let you do whatever you want.» He’s like, «I’ll suggest, but you’re a woman of your own.» He’s a very smart man. My dad says that. He’s like, «Good man.» When I was working at corporate, I loved my boss and my team. I had my come to Jesus moment when I recognized I was not happy. I believe we are the co-creators of our reality. We co-create every single day.

[bctt tweet=»We are the co-creators of our reality. We co-create every single day.» via=»no»]

That’s what being a human is. The privilege of being born into this world is that you get to do that. I started off as a travel blogger. I was always the kind of person who always wanted to do something that would help other people. In return, I didn’t realize that it would heal me. At that point, it had been about five years since my brother had passed, and I didn’t grieve my brother’s loss. I was healing a lot that I went through with that process because it happened so suddenly. The family got sick. It was a lot within those five years. I didn’t grieve his loss. I said, «I’m going to quit my job. I’m going to leave and travel the world with clean water filters. I’m going to become a travel blogger.»

If there’s anything I know, it’s marketing. I know that if you’re going to do something, you’ve got to find a niche, stand out, and be different. I don’t have to stand with a neon sign or anything, but you yourself have to tell your story. That is the most important thing when you’re building any business. It doesn’t matter what it is. I started pitching to brands and telling them a story, and it worked. Lo and behold, I did that for about three and a half years. It was a good run. I learned a lot about the influencer industry, marketing industry, and all this stuff. I don’t regret it because I got to travel the world. Essentially, I got paid to do it. I never made as much money as I make now, which means I never hit six figures.

The most I ever made in my business was about $80,000, which is almost close enough. Towards the end of 2018, I started to get asked to speak on stages about building a purposeful brand, influencer marketing, and all those things. I’ve always loved to public speak. For me, I was like, «This is so fun.» I then started to get people reaching out to me, asking me how to build a brand online. I recognized that I was coaching people, people were getting results, and I was doing it for free. I was like, «There’s something wrong here. I’m spending half my day on the phone and not getting paid for it.» I was like, «Wait a minute.»

I created my very first online course. It was how to build an online brand. That was my first $11,000 launch. I did a Facebook Live and then pitched at the end of the hour in the Facebook Live about the program that I created. Within the last fifteen minutes, I had two people buy right away. It was a five-hour course. As soon as the live was finished and I closed my laptop, the tears were running down my face. I was so happy because I couldn’t believe it. It’s somebody within fifteen minutes, and I made $1,000. I was like, «What is this?» As the days went on, it kept going and going. I was like, «There’s something here.» I began to pivot from September to December of 2018.

It was so funny because they were like, «What have you been doing?» From September to December, I went from making peanuts to $50,000 right away in those three months. In 2019, I took it off. I relaunched my YouTube channel and began to pivot, and we all know what happened in 2020. Everyone got stuck at home, and that was it. The biggest thing for me, and it’s always been the foundation of what I wanted to create, was it’s the ripple effect. I don’t believe in doing it for someone. I believe in teaching someone the tools that they can go out and do it. I believe we live in an infinite universe, and everything comes around and goes around. There is enough for everyone if you believe there’s enough for you.

That’s something that you have to internalize and recognize if you actually believe that there’s enough for you. I give my clients the tools to be able to grow, monetize, and create the lives they want to have to travel, make money, and be with their families. It doesn’t have to be building an online course or being a coach. It’s just doing the things that they love. I work with women who want to make enough money to be able to support their families and not have to travel the world and do other things. They just want to spend time with their kids. That’s beautiful. To me, the biggest thing is to be able to create a life that you’re happy and proud of. If you came to me and you were like, «I want to make donuts,» let’s make the best freaking donuts in the world. Let’s do it. That’s essentially how it all started and how it kicked off.

MIC 23 | The Social Girl Traveler

The Social Girl Traveler: The biggest thing is to be able to create a life that you’re happy, and you’re proud of.

I love that. Most people say, «I want to start a business and charge $10,000 for an hour with me.» I love how the business led you. There were no second thoughts or self-doubt in the sense that you were already creating an impact. You were just not aware of it or hadn’t structured it as a business yet. There’s always the first sale and the first moment, but it was seamless. You knew you were adding value.

You put value first over making money, so the making money just followed. I know you are very specific in who you work with because I know you work mostly with women. You get them to the first three numbers on the other side of the coma, like the $100,000 mark. For any business owner, they say that only 1% or 5% of business owners reach the six figures in the first three years or some statistic like that. You are committed to making these women not start a business but stay in business.

That’s the hardest thing. I’ve worked with so many people over the years. The moment I get on a call with someone, I know who’s going to stick around and who’s not. It’s like dating. You go on a date with someone, and for the first 5 to 10 minutes, I could tell this could continue, or this is going to end here. It’s the same thing with business. It’s the passion and the drive that people have. The biggest thing is the why. That’s the why.

MIC 23 | The Social Girl Traveler

The Social Girl Traveler: The biggest thing is the why and the passion that people have. That is their drive.

Let’s dig into this. In my experience with the six figures, it took me three years to go from $0 to $100,000. It took me one year to go from $100,000 to $200,000. What is it? Let’s talk about it in monthly numbers.

The sweet spot is between $80,000 and $100,000. It’s that little hump.

We need to make $8,333 a month to get to $100,000. I was in a program that if I made $100,000, I could advance to the next level. I wanted to be with the cool kids. Unfortunately, I can’t make things up or lie. I just can’t. I had to do it for real. I made $101,000, so now I qualify. An average from the range of $4,000 to $5,000 a month to $8,300 is the biggest step. What is it?

It’s not that somebody can do it. You can do it one time. Usually, people who come to me will be like, «I hit $8,000 last month, but now I’m at $3,000 or $2,000. How do I do it consistently?» Honestly, I think it hits two things. Number one, recognizing that you have a business. What I mean is that you’re so wired to work for other people that when you become an entrepreneur, it is all on you. I know you’re like, «You’re everything.» If somebody’s reading this, they’re like, «That’s logical.» No, take a second. The way your brain is actually wired is that you’re always asking for permission to do the next thing. When you’re building a business, the person you have to ask permission from is you.

What happens if you don’t trust yourself? What happens if you don’t think you’re worthy of receiving money? What happens if you don’t think you’re capable of helping other people? You stay stuck where you are. You’re not going to grow. You do the dance where you have a 9:00 to 5:00, and you have a passion, or you’ve quit your 9:00 to 5:00 and you’re struggling hard to make ends meet, so you’re still doing the little here and there, but you won’t commit to building that business. That is the difference. That’s 80% of what happens when people come to me. Most of the time, someone else is running their business.

What I mean by someone else is it’s their clients. It’s the fear of failure. It’s their family and friends and what they’re saying behind the scenes because they quit their job and all the things when if people could recognize they own a business. If you had an actual brick and mortar, if you’ve paid to rent a spot, you would not be second guessing yourself whatsoever because you have rent to pay versus when you are a service provider, and you’re in the online space, you’re working from home. That is the biggest thing that stops people. The second thing is when you see the numbers.

By the numbers, I mean get crystal clear on how much you’re making, how much you’re spending, and how much you actually need to make. Work backward in order to reach that $8,000 or $10,000 a month mark. How many packages do you need? How many clients do you need? How many do you need to sell? Freaking sell it. If you need to sell five spots to hit $5,000 to meet that $10,000 mark, don’t post a post or get one story and then be like, «Nobody listened.» You posted one time. Keep going. It’s a full circle. People don’t show up because they get scared or get nervous about what people are going to think.

I love that. There is a where you can call it a vortex or a Bermuda Triangle of people getting lost in that $3,000 to $5,000 a month all the way to the $8,000. For most of us, it felt like a brick wall, and we went at it in a tactical way like, «I need to fix my website. I need to post some more. I need to hire an expert who tells me this and that.» What you’re saying is that all could work, but if foundationally you are in a hobby business, don’t take yourself seriously, don’t have boundaries with your family, and are not really committed, you can throw money at the problem with experts and you’re not going to do it.

It’s this game. It’s your brain. It’s so much of you that keeps you stuck in your way. When you recognize that, that’s when you’re able to make that change.

[bctt tweet=»It’s so much of you that keeps you stuck in your way, and when you recognize that, you can make that change. That’s the game changer.» via=»no»]

If you’re reading this and are in that range of not yet at the six-figure a year, ask yourself. What is getting in your own way? I know the answer. It’s you, but what are you telling yourself in your head that is getting in the way? If we unlock that, we unlock anything.

That’s what it is. Once that shift happens, it literally is like a switch. At least for me, that’s what it was. I knew it was in my own way. I didn’t know what I was doing. When I recognized that I was like, «It’s been me this whole time,» I got it. Like you said, you can have the website, business coach, and do the thing, but if you don’t have the foundational piece of selling a product and doing it, most people quit. They’re like, «This is too hard. Nobody’s buying.» You only talked about it once a week. Nobody’s going to buy. There’s so much noise on social media. You have to talk about it consistently.

I love that. What is the future look like? What will the next twelve months bring for Jen?

In the next twelve months, it’s TED Talk. This time in 2023, we’ll hit the seven-figure mark. I’m excited. I’m very happy and proud. I can’t believe I’m actually saying that. It will be a bigger team, more expansion, more help, and serving more people. I’d love to start to dip more into my passions. What I mean by that is I had somebody in my DMs reach out to me and are like, «I want to work with you, but I have a 9:00 to 5:00 and this side hustle. I can’t commit to it because it’s not making me money yet. Until it makes me money, I’m not going to commit to another mastermind or another program.»

I was like, «How many side hustles do you have?» She is a travel blogger. She also does social media management, and the social media business makes her money. She’s also in finance. She has a 9:00 to 5:00 and has these two jobs. The social media management company makes her money. I’m like, «You’re making money for your business.» She’s like, «No, it’s from the other business.» I was like, «Hold on one second. You’re telling me that you have this side hustle. First of all, you have a 9:00 to 5:00 that funds both the side hustle, and the one side hustle that’s successful isn’t the side hustle that you want to do. You’re still doing the passion project, but you’re complaining about not being able to pay bills.»

She just looked at me. When you start a business, you either start a business and have a lot of money saved up, or you have an investment company that has invested in your company and money to be able to fund it and start, or like most people, you have a 9:00 to 5:00, and that 9:00 to 5:00 is your Angel investor for that passion project that you have, or you don’t have a 9:00 to 5:00, and you have one business that makes you the money that funds your passion. At some point, you have to put on your big girl pants, especially if you have a family and have to pay bills. You have to do the thing that brings in the money to then potentially be able to do the passion project.

I’m like, «It’s never going to be this is never going to happen. This is just going to be on hold now until you build the revenue and get it to a place that you’re comfortable with so that you can do what you want to do.» She had like a light bulb moment and was like, «My God.» For me, it’s going to be able to start doing what I started, going back in a full circle, doing more of the water initiatives, giving back, the impact, the social enterprise, and all that stuff. I would probably start doing that this time in 2023.

I love that. The truth is that, «When I get this, I’ll do this,» but when we have a passion, we also have permission to bring in, at least in conversation, our passion into your business, which is not always the case in a 9:00 to 5:00 because you have to work within a box of what is acceptable in that environment. I know you are already talking about your passion in your 9:00 to 5:00 where you are the boss. There’s some weight, but at the same time, you’re just one person. I love that you’re going to be buying yourself time. That’s what scaling means.

It happened to me. My show runs without me. As far as the running of the company, I put in one hour a week, and then I serve my clients. That’s what it buys you. It buys you the time to open a new business, start a new project, or for some of our readers, have that baby and spend most of the time with a baby knowing you have a solid business that you’ve built that is running, and you are the chairwoman of the business instead of the jack of all trades. Miss Jen, where can people find you?

How To Achieve Absolute Productivity Without Compromising Health With Mia Moran

I’m so excited to bring back my friend and colleague, Mia Moran. Mia is a mom of three and a coach who has struck her perfect balance between motherhood, wellness and work. She supports high-achieving female entrepreneurs who are overwhelmed with the life and wellness pieces and find the version of balance. She’s the host of the Plan Simple Podcast, Bestselling Author of Plan Simple Meals and creator of the Flow Planning Method, Flow Planner and Flow365.

I’ve had Mia in my show before. We’ve known each other for many years. We’re good friends. We both live in Massachusetts, but I want to bring Mia to have this conversation about what productivity is and what does this look like to have our own version of productivity. Not as should of what we need to but what is it that we’re called to do? Listen up.

Here we are. This is not our first rodeo. It’s not our first interview. I think you’ve been in my show before. I’ve been in your show a few times but catch me up, Mia. What are you working on? I know a lot of changes at home. Your oldest child is off to college, which probably created a new reality. I know you work a lot with moms and women, managing time, projects, and dreams. Catch me up.

He did go off to college. By the way, that was very sad. I didn’t realize how much time being sad would take, but I am now on the other side of that. I realize that it did take some time, so I’m glad I was aware. We’re doing a lot of the same, just at a deeper, more resourced level. I like to think that what we’re doing is like the gym of, let’s call the Zen gym.

The gym that has good yoga classes version of productivity and looking at what it looks like to be productive as a woman. I don’t want to confuse these two words because we’re looking at feminine productivity, which is not exclusively for women. Looking at the more feminine side of what that even is pertains to both men and women. Diving into what that means and how that means we’re showing up in the day-to-day.

We’re going to dive right into how do we get here, but before we do that, I want to say that we’re not talking about getting everything fit into the day. We’re not talking about burning yourself until the to-do list is done. We’re talking about a whole lot of different level of productivity and a lot of elements that you wouldn’t always put into productivity, but I know you, Mia. You cook.

Including sleep. Sleep is one of the most products.

Sleep and joy and probably lunar rhythms. I don’t know. I’m guessing knowing you and maybe even some oils and bath salts. How did we get here to be focusing on being the expert, to be creating this space for the conversation of productivity among women?

I’ve been doing calendars for a long time, which my brother reminded me. He’s like, “You used to make calendars when we were like eight.” I think I’ve been onto this problem for some time but in this particular iteration, it came from a health transformation myself which led to, as it does with us entrepreneurs, a book and a book tour and meeting a lot of women and talking about the food piece. Realizing that wasn’t the problem that I was here to solve.

We didn’t have a food issue. We had an I-don’t-have-time-to-cook issue.

Also, the hundreds of women I was meeting across the country. I would end up in these rooms where I felt like people knew more than I did about what one should eat, yet they weren’t. They weren’t able to make time. I’m talking about nutritionists and health coaches. I was so intimidated sometimes by the rooms that I was walking into, but I’m like, “No one’s doing it. Why is that? How can we shift this a little bit?” Show up to the lives we know we want to show up to. In fact, many of the people who I was talking to were teaching others how to show up to that life, the why can’t we all make time for it?

How do we make time?

By planning from the inside out and getting rid of all the things we thought we were supposed to have, we all have a point where we’re like, “I got those things. It’s still not quite working now. It doesn’t quite feel how I thought it would.” The part that makes it feminine is a bit about starting from the intuition. I like to think of it as circular because many of us are so busy that we’re never quiet. Maybe we sleep.

[bctt tweet=»How do we make time? By planning from the inside out and getting rid of everything we thought we were supposed to have. » via=»no»]

Suppose you’ve ever had one of those days where it’s been so much that you fall asleep in your clothes that you had dinner in. We fall asleep. To me, that’s not conscious, like quiet time. We wake up, open our phones, and check our email. We’re like back in the rat race, and all these things are happening almost to us. We don’t create the quiet time to understand what it is that we’re meant to be here doing.

There’s this thing at the beginning that’s this dance between one of the first steps is to make the time so that there’s quiet. Once you have that time, learn how to go through the process of following through. It’s like, “I have to do this.” You’re such a good example of that because you’ve had so many businesses where you’re like, “I have to do this.” That’s just you probably going on a walk or taking a shower, pausing for ten minutes and getting this idea that you’re like, “I have to do this.” That’s all it is.

I love that. I’ve been doing a lot of research. I have to catch up. There’s a lot going on on my end, but one of my companies has a team of 30. One of the things we’ve been switching lately is daily check-ins, performance conversations or performance check-in moments. We have shifted from focusing on the number and how many you do and how much you did do today to spending 30 minutes together sharing personal wins, moments of joy, words of wisdom and our performance. We’ve been doing this for a while now. We touched on the number for a minute but we spend our time being with each other, seeing each other and celebrating each other. Translate that to ourselves, we don’t spend enough time being with ourselves, seeing ourselves and celebrating ourselves, but how do we stop?

Do you mean in order to be able to do that?

Yes, because I know that when I’m on the go, I can’t stop. It’s one thing to the next.

I think it’s the same thing as doing something. It’s the same quality. This does dovetail into the process that we take people through. When you decide that you want to do anything, so whether that’s going on the next project or that you want to take the time, you have to be the one to make that choice. I can’t tell you. I can yell, which I feel like I do from the rooftops. I do think this is the secret that we’re missing is that we’re going too fast and we need to pause.

You also have to be able to find that yourself and know that’s what you want to do. The thing that’s genius about what you’re doing with your team is that you’re doing it together. One of the things that we do in anything that we decide a lot of times as women is that we’re going to go figure it out ourselves because that must be what we’re supposed to do.

I think sometimes support is the missing piece in that. Even finding one person who’s committed to also finding quiet. Maybe you sit with them for an hour a day or pay for a class like a yoga class or meditation class where they make you sit for an hour a day or something where you’re slowing yourself down in a conscious, somewhat awake state.

It doesn’t have to be complicated and it doesn’t have to be an hour, but you do have to pause. You do have to become the notice of your brain, see the thoughts, and let them pass through. Quieting your whole system down because a lot of people get frustrated with the idea. I’m not saying sit down and meditate by any means. A lot of people get frustrated with quiet because their minds are still racing. Sometimes our bodies are even still racing. You do need some tools to be able to ground yourself in that moment.

It takes practice and guidance. I know you have a community. We’re going to talk about that in a minute around helping women do that. Before we go there, let me ask. There’s so much judgment in not doing.

I know. That’s a big problem.

I think it’s an external and an internal problem. I have four children. It’s been very busy in this house. Now I have one baby left in the house. There’s a lot of doing that I no longer need to do. If I don’t do laundry for five days, it doesn’t matter. It’s three of us. We can always find another pair of pants, but there’s so much in me like the external pressure of doing. You could say that my house has gone down dramatically, but I can’t stop. Laundry has to be done and folded by or else?

Let’s use laundry as an example because it’s a great example. Often, I use dishes because people often ask me about the kitchen. One could fold laundry, totally stressed out. It’s like that thing that’s crammed into your to-do list and you have ten minutes. You’re trying to do it because you’re supposed to because you’re a woman and someone says.

Your mother-in-law will come and inspect like you’ll be judged.

If it’s not done correctly and everything’s coumarate into your drawers in the perfect little role. That’s one energy that you could fold the basket of clothes or use that time that it takes to slow down and be with the clothes and fold them. With everything, it’s a choice. This is the thing that I’ve found over and over.

When I’m working with people, we’re getting under like, “Why isn’t that thing happening or how could you look at this differently or why is it taking that long when you wanted it to take this long? What’s going on?” A lot of times, it is what we bring to it. The thing is, if we spend an hour, even the act of planning can calm us down.

Once we get everything out of our head and onto paper, we can see it. For a lot of people, that is like something that is a calming activity. It doesn’t have to be meditation or you could go for a run or whatever or something that grounds you and calms you down. You go write a hard email that you’ve been meaning to write and you haven’t done it for whatever reason because you’re not finding the right words.

If you are calm when you do that, you will perceive that you write it quicker. That thing will feel more useful. If you are stressed out and you have an hour to get this email off because you’ve promised it to somebody to get them and you’re strung out. You’ve just folded all the clothes. It’s going to be a different experience. By the end of the day, your whole system feels differently when we pile these things up over and over again. At some level, taking that time off saves you time.

I love that because here, we’re talking about less about what we do or don’t do. It’s about who we are at every moment of the doing or not doing. You could say, “Mia says I’m going to meditate or whatever.” Mia doesn’t say we have to meditate, but I could get someone’s advice to slow down and force myself to slow down and make that moment so unproductive even if I stop the movement, the action or I can continue with my action but shift my inside in how I perceive or experience myself in that action.

In that way, do you know what it makes me think of, Mia? The new bikes. Do you know the bikes that you can bike and you can charge as you bike?

Those that are electric?

It’s like an electric bike or I don’t know.

You’re feeding them as you bike.

You’re feeding them, but you’re not plugging it in and stopping. There’s a way that you bike and then you let go and you’re still riding, but it’s feeding. You started your journey as feeding people healthier and now you’ve taken your work towards feeding ourselves. Feeding ourselves with peace of mind and balance just by managing our energy and where we put our mind and how we go about our every day.

What you said about the energy, that’s another way to look at it. We think that productivity is about time management. If we start to shift into making it about energy management, you can start to see how, “I do need to write that sales page but also, I need to come at it with the right energy or I’m not going to sell.” In order to do that, it’s not only about writing. It’s about what I had for lunch and that I feel good and I am not worrying about something in some other part of my life. We’re spending that time managing our energy instead of our time.

MIC 22 | Absolute Productivity

Absolute Productivity: We think that productivity is about time management, but if we start to shift into making it about energy management, then we can see how doing what we have to do also needs to come at it with the right energy, or we’re not going to sell.

Talk to me about how you work with people. How do you take women on a journey?

I, again, believe that we have to take that personal responsibility to want to make some change. We operate pretty broadly because we work with people who work, so mostly entrepreneurs but some people who also have jobs, women. We’re looking at all the different areas of your life and how they go together because the end goal is that you’re doing your work well, I suppose.

That doesn’t normally go well for women unless they’re feeling good at home and in their relationships and if they’re a mom, with their kids and their bodies and in their spiritual practices and in all the different aspects of their life. I don’t believe that we can plan how we will do our work if we haven’t thought holistically about all those different things.

That’s what we’re doing. Usually, someone comes in because they’ve decided some piece of that needs to change then we shift all of it. The idea is that we have to decide we need to change, but then we don’t have to do it alone. There are different parts of the process that are all benefited from being in the group. We run retreats around setting 90-day goals.

[bctt tweet=»We have to decide that we need to change, but we don’t have to do it alone.» via=»no»]

As part of this gym membership type thing, we have Monday calls all day long so that people can come in and be heard, like your team, about what three things they’re committed to doing that week and get any coaching they need to get through that. It’s mostly about being heard and being organized enough in your brain to know the three things that are the most important. We call people out when we’re like, “That has nothing to do with your goals.” Those are the things that everybody around you wants to do.

What are the three things that are your three things? We do that on Mondays. On Fridays, we plan. We go deep into certain topics. I believe we can bring this idea of where we want to bring our energy and how we plan for it into all the different things. We can do that for our home, work, spiritual practices and food. We navigate between different topics from month to month.

Another cool thing that we do is we have lots like you come to three a day sometimes, we’re coworking sessions. As you commit to like, “I’m going to do this sales page,” you can come. It’s almost like a yoga class like we ground you. We’re like, “Take a deep breath and sit down. What are you doing?” You put that on a post-it and you share it. You get timed. Somebody holds the time for you, so you got to get lost.

Babysit time. It’s like homeroom with a teacher telling you, “Sit down,” in a loving way.

We’re doing it for yourself and it’s with a whole bunch of women doing hard things. We do that. It’s all about learning how to follow through and knowing that you don’t have to be alone.

Create a container through which we can fall through because it is through the things that we do all the time. The hard things you said, sitting with a bunch of women doing hard things. I procrastinate all of my hard things, then I hit a wall then it’s meltdown time. I do that all the time. It’s not proactive, not efficient, and not pretty to watch.

I’m watching my kid at college now and I’m seeing how we’re literally not taught. We’re not taught how to focus. The world around us is not helping us to focus. We’re not taught how to set goals that are different than the goals that are being set for us when we’re in certain circumstances. We’re not taught to lead by our intuition. I feel like all of these things are becoming more. Sometimes, I look around my world and I’m like, “The world works like this.” The second you step out, no. You can’t walk into a board meeting and say, “Intuitively, I think.”

I do.

I know. We all are.

I do that a lot. Mia, if I am that woman, another year’s ending, my new year resolution, it’s October and whatever I promised myself I was going to focus on hasn’t happened. How do I work with you?

You just come to Plan Simple. We have lots of different ways in. You can find the program Flow365 and sign up right away. We also have lots of different ways. I’m not sure when this is going to air, but October around here is work month. We have something called a work week. We also have a free retreat for people in November that’s all about more of that mindfulness piece. It’s called Make December Matter. It’s all about creating space for those last six weeks.

I’m intrigued by that one. Is it a virtual retreat?

It is a virtual retreat. We’ve been doing virtual retreats, by the way, since way before COVID. It’s a little bit of a harder sell now because more of us are wanting to be in person. I do believe that, especially for people who are balancing a lot of things, which as many women. It’s still a nice thing to be able to know how to retreat in your own space.

MIC 22 | Absolute Productivity

Absolute Productivity: For people who are balancing a lot of things, which is many women, it’s still a nice thing to be able to know how to retreat in your own space

Anyway, that was a long way of saying we have a lot of free resources and those are always a way in to see what it’s like to be supported in this way, which is different. We teach about planning, but we’re just trying to help you get your things done. We’re trying to help you be able to move and not feel like you’re going through mud all the time, which many of us can stay there for a long time.

Mia, thank you. Where do people find you?

Our website, PlanSimple.com, is the best way. You can get to everything from there.

You should check out Mia’s work. She has done not only beautiful work over the years but impactful work with a lot of women. Thank you, Mia, for taking the time and joining us.

Thank you so much for having me.
